For the last 18 years, East Rockaway, New York, resident and attorney Marc Rovner has served as general counsel and director of business development at BETA Abstract LLC. As part of his ongoing education and career development as an attorney, Marc Rovner belongs to several professional organizations, including the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). The NYSBA recently announced a joint initiative with the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY) to help provide access to legal services for those who have experienced domestic violence. Many victims of domestic abuse have limited resources and access to adequate legal assistance, specifically in matters of protection orders and finding safe housing, as well as child custody, visitation and support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 25 percent of women and 10 percent of men are victims, or have been victims in the past, of domestic violence carried out by a romantic partner. The NYSBA-WBASNY initiative is aimed at raising awareness and seeks to recruit more pro bono attorneys and develop more pro bono programs to serve victims of domestic violence.
