As the general counsel and director of business development of BETA Abstract LLC, Marc Rovner of East Rockaway, New York, supervises legal departments and integrates business development initiatives across offices in three states, New York, New Jersey and Florida. Attorney Marc Rovner, who primarily runs the Oceanside, New York office, supports a variety of nonprofit organizations outside his professional work, including the Puppy Love Pet Rescue. The rescue advocates for adopting a dog from a rescue or shelter, instead of purchasing from a breeder or pet store. Adopting a dog comes with multiple advantages, as explored below. 1. Save a life. Dogs end up in shelters for a variety of reasons, from owner abandonment or relinquishment to removal from a neglectful or abusive owner. Some previously lived on the streets. Adopting means giving a dog a second chance at life and helps the rescue or shelter make room for new arrivals. 2. Dogs are partially to fully trained. You can avoid some of the stress of training a dog by adopting one that already knows the basic obedience and house manners. Older puppies and most adult dogs will also have already been housebroken. 3. Pre-screened and medically up-to-date. Shelters and rescues screen dogs for behavior and aggression issues before putting them up for adoption. Reputable facilities also make staying up-to-date on vaccinations a priority, which helps ensure you adopt a healthy pet. 4. Lower price tag. While fees may vary, shelters and rescues ask for a much smaller adoption fee than the purchase price of a dog from a breeder or pet store. Shelter and rescue dogs may also be spayed/neutered and vaccinated, which prevents you from needing to pay for these services after adoption. 5. Reduces puppy mill support. Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue draws support away from puppy mills, which contribute to a nationwide pet overpopulation problem. Many shelters are filled to capacity due to this issue, forcing some shelters to resort to euthanizing dogs in their care to make room for new ones.
